Texas Children's Hospital has opened the country's first Detransition Clinic, fulfilling a requirement of a settlement reached with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in May.

The clinic provides multidisciplinary medical care to patients who previously underwent gender-transition interventions. It offers care to patients through age 21 and detransition-related obstetric and gynecologic care to patients older than 21.

The settlement required the hospital to pay $10 million to resolve claims brought under the Texas Health Care Program Fraud Prevention Act, which alleged that the hospital billed Texas Medicaid for unallowable gender-transition interventions.

As part of the settlement terms, the hospital must permanently terminate the medical staff privileges of multiple physicians. The hospital is also required to amend its bylaws to specify that performing gender-transition interventions automatically triggers relinquishment of medical staff privileges.

Texas Children's must fully fund the clinic's services for its first five years, making care available at no cost to patients. The hospital is also required to promote the clinic on its website.
