The Oregon Health Authority downgraded its recreational use health advisory for Cullaby Lake from an advisory to a precaution. Water monitoring confirmed cyanotoxin levels have fallen below guidelines for human recreation, but remain above safe levels for dogs.

The advisory was originally issued Sept. 17. Pet owners should keep dogs away from areas where algae blooms are visible.

The authority advises recreational visitors to watch for signs of cyanobacteria blooms, which can develop and disappear unpredictably. Only a fraction of Oregon water bodies are monitored for blooms and toxins.

Visitors should avoid swimming or boating in areas where water appears foamy, scummy, thick like paint, pea-green or blue-green, or shows thick brownish-red mats or bright green clumps. Cyanotoxins can exist in clear water.
