The Michigan Department of Transportation announced the second round of its Maritime and Port Facility Assistance Grant Program is now accepting applications.

The program distributes $5 million in one-time funding to commercial port infrastructure improvement projects, according to MDOT. The funding came through a one-time appropriation in the state's fiscal year 2027 budget.

"Our ports and maritime facilities are critical connectors for Michigan's industries and communities," State Transportation Director Bradley C. Wieferich said. "This grant funding reinforces MDOT's commitment to help modernize maritime infrastructure, enhance safety and expand capacity across the state's transportation system."

The program, created through legislation signed into law in 2022, aims to strengthen Michigan's economic competitiveness, reduce freight transportation costs, improve system reliability and mitigate environmental impacts of freight movement.

Applications are due Dec. 23, and project selections will be made within 90 days of the deadline.
