Governor Greg Abbott requested federal disaster tax relief for individuals and businesses affected by severe storms and flooding that began July 14, 2026. In a letter to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Abbott asked for suspension of federal tax filing and payment deadlines and waiver of late fees and penalties for taxpayers in all 62 counties covered by a state disaster proclamation he issued on July 14.

A Major Disaster Declaration was approved on September 1, 2026, for 23 of those 62 counties.

"Texans who took damage from the July storms and floods need this relief," Abbott said. "I urge Secretary Bessent to suspend the tax deadlines and waive all late fees and penalties so families and businesses can rebuild."
