Transportation goods and services rose 7.9% from September 2025 to September 2026, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The increase was driven primarily by gasoline prices, which rose 34.2% year-over-year and accounted for 29.5% of the overall increase in consumer prices across all goods and services.
Transportation accounted for 35.4% of the 3.7% annual increase in consumer prices, the bureau said. The top three contributors to transportation inflation in September 2026 were gasoline (29.5%), airline fares (5.4%), and motor vehicle maintenance and repair (1.6%).
Items that dampened transportation's contribution to inflation included motor vehicle insurance (down 3.7%), used cars and trucks (down 0.9%), and other intercity transportation such as bus, train, and ship fares (down 0.1%).
