Michigan has awarded $3.4 million in opioid settlement funds to expand recovery housing, the state's Department of Health and Human Services and State Housing Development Authority announced. The competitive grant program distributed funding to 18 agencies to establish 24 new recovery residences across 14 counties, creating an estimated 205 new recovery beds.
Grant recipients included 70x7 Life Recovery in Kent County (13 beds), HCC Connection in Wayne County (27 beds), Pinnacle Recovery Group in Ingham County (23 beds), and others across the state. Previous state investments in recovery housing resulted in 136 new recovery beds at 18 properties in six counties.
One resident whose recovery was supported through a recovery residence described the impact: "The biggest impact has been on my relationship with my 13-year-old daughter. There was a time when that relationship was at risk because of my addiction. Today, it is as strong as it has ever been."
The state is slated to receive more than $1.8 billion in opioid settlement funds by 2040, with half distributed to the State Opioid Healing and Recovery Fund and the other half directed to counties, cities and townships. The state also awarded more than $12 million in opioid settlement dollars in recent months to more than 50 community agencies offering community-based supports and recovery residences.
