The Michigan Department of Transportation is spending approximately $9 million to replace lighting, poles and foundations on US-131 in Grand Rapids, a project that started in May and is expected to conclude by mid-November.

The work spans northbound and southbound US-131 between Wealthy and Pearl streets. According to MDOT, the new lighting, poles and foundations will improve visibility through the section known as the S-curve in downtown Grand Rapids. The department's economic modeling estimates the investment will directly and indirectly support 76 jobs.

Motorists will encounter lane closures, ramp closures and traffic shifts throughout the project. The off-ramp from northbound US-131 to Cherry Street is scheduled to close from 9 a.m. Oct. 12 through 3 p.m. Oct. 16.
