The U.S. Navy's Corsair unmanned surface vessels have deployed to support maritime security operations in Panama following their performance during Exercise Panamax 2026 in mid-August.

The autonomous craft participated in the exercise alongside U.S. and partner forces, demonstrating capabilities for long-endurance maritime patrol. After the exercise concluded, the U.S. embassy and U.S. Southern Command coordinated with Panama's Ministry of Security to retain the vessels for an ongoing mission in partnership with Panama's National Aeronaval Service.

The platforms are engineered to operate without an onboard crew and can maintain persistent patrol presence across the maritime domain. According to Marine Corps Col. Ian Fletcher, commander of Southcom's Autonomous Warfare Command, "Their onboard radar and electro-optical sensors provide many of the enhanced detection capabilities associated with a manned patrol craft, allowing operators to maintain awareness over a larger area." By integrating unmanned systems with manned patrol vessels and airborne assets, Panama can expand monitoring coverage and increase its ability to assess potential threats.

The current mission focuses on strengthening maritime awareness and supporting Panama's efforts against narcotics trafficking, regional threat networks and threats from designated terrorist organizations. The platforms operate as a complement to, not a replacement for, Panama's maritime security forces and decision-making authorities.

The partnership also provides an opportunity to assess how additional autonomous systems could support protection of critical waterways and maritime infrastructure in the region, including the Panama Canal.
