The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is offering scholarships to students pursuing careers in opioid treatment and substance use disorder services.
The Michigan Opioid Treatment Access Scholarship Program provides up to $16,000 per year to eligible students enrolled in bachelor's or master's degree programs in social work, professional counseling, marriage and family therapy, nursing, physician assistant studies, and public health.
Students must commit to at least two years of employment providing opioid treatment services in Michigan after graduation. Applicants must also complete program evaluations and surveys, and enroll in an accredited program within the United States.
The state has allocated $2.5 million for the program, which could support approximately 100 students depending on funding amounts. The deadline to apply is November 9. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance status within 12 weeks of the deadline.
The scholarships are funded through opioid settlement dollars. Michigan is set to receive more than $1.8 billion from national opioid settlements by 2040.
