Jose Antonio Zayas has been charged with murder in the Oct. 1 fatal shooting of Culver CityBus driver Bruce Rodriguez, 42, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
The shooting occurred around 5 p.m. when Zayas boarded a Culver CityBus driven by Rodriguez. Zayas asked Rodriguez to stop the bus so he could exit, but Rodriguez was unable to due to heavy traffic and the bus's position on South Centinela Avenue.
Zayas allegedly fired a handgun multiple times, killing Rodriguez. Zayas removed his bicycle from the front rack and fled. He was arrested the next day.
Zayas faces one count of murder with the special circumstance allegation of murder of transportation personnel, and a special allegation that he personally used a firearm. He also faces one count of felon in possession of a firearm.
If convicted as charged, Zayas faces life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. His arraignment is scheduled for Nov. 5. He is being held without bail.
"Our transit systems must be safe for every driver, commuter and community member," said Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman.
