State and local officials gathered for an open house marking the completion of a new Southeast Michigan Psychiatric Hospital that cost $383.4 million, with the facility expected to begin accepting patients this fall. The 264-bed hospital will care for up to 192 adults and 72 youth, increasing the state's behavioral health capacity by 54 beds and creating 150 professional healthcare jobs.
The hospital features separate facilities for children and adults, with 198 single-bed suites with private bathrooms, 33 double rooms, and a studio apartment for independence training for adult patients. The more than 400,000-square-foot facility includes a gymnasium, art rooms, sensory spaces, and 12 secure outdoor courtyards. The building's interior design features Michigan wildflowers throughout to help create a calm, healing environment.
The facility was made possible by $383.4 million in budget investments by Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the state legislature. "Access to reliable, affordable behavioral health care is critical to the health and well-being of Michigan residents and communities," Whitmer said.
