Motor fuel prices surge 37% in a year, hitting new highs

Gasoline reached $4.36 per gallon nationally in September, while diesel set a record at $6.29 per gallon, both reflecting steep year-over-year increases.

The average price for regular gasoline jumped to $4.36 per gallon in September 2026, up 7.3 percent from August and up 37.6 percent from a year earlier, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics said today.

Diesel prices rose even more steeply. The average price for diesel no. 2 reached $6.29 per gallon in September 2026, an all-time record. According to the bureau, diesel was up 9.3 percent from the previous all-time high set in June 2022, up 15.2 percent from August, and up 67.8 percent from September 2025.

All regions saw year-over-year increases in regular gasoline prices. Prices ranged from $3.86 per gallon on the Gulf Coast (up 41.2 percent) to $5.54 per gallon on the West Coast (up 31.1 percent).

The Midwest averaged $4.17 per gallon, up 38.3 percent; the Lower Atlantic, $4.07 per gallon, up 39.8 percent; the Central Atlantic, $4.37 per gallon, up 37.4 percent; the Rocky Mountain region, $4.44 per gallon, up 39.6 percent; and New England, $4.31 per gallon, up 40 percent from September 2025.
