Two men have been identified as suspects in the stabbing of an off-duty New York City police detective on October 2 in the Bronx, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The suspects, identified by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement as Dangelo Rafael Jean Caraballo and Sneider Mejia Bautista, both from the Dominican Republic, remain at large. The men approached the detective and attempted to rob him, stabbing him seven times when he defended himself, authorities said. The detective was hospitalized and is recovering. The suspects fled on an e-bike.
Caraballo has prior arrests including charges related to reckless endangerment, reckless driving, unlawful fleeing from police, possession of burglary tools, drug possession, and weapon possession involving a loaded firearm, according to DHS. Following his arrest in December 2024 for possession of burglary tools, he was released before U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement could lodge a detainer.
Bautista has prior arrests for criminal possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools, grand larceny, and weapon possession. Following his arrest in October 2025 for weapon possession, ICE lodged a detainer that was declined by the New York Police Department. His other arrests resulted in release before ICE could lodge detainers.
Caraballo entered the United States through Arizona in February 2023 and was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol before being released. Bautista entered through Arizona in December 2022 and was encountered by Border Patrol before being released. An immigration judge issued Bautista a final removal order on May 8, 2025, according to DHS.
