Join the Monument Square Landmark District Study Committee and Boston Landmarks Commission staff at a community meeting on October 21, 2026 at 6:00 PM, to learn more about the proposed district and how it offers protection to historic properties and the neighborhood.

The Monument Square Landmark District Study Committee and staff of the Boston Landmarks Commission are pleased to announce the release of a preliminaryworking draftof a study report on the proposed designation of the Monument Square Landmark District and Protection Area.

This working draft is the first of three drafts that will be released for public comment, designed by the Study Committee to elicit feedback and exchange on the proposal. Everyone is welcome

Two printed copies are available to read at the Charlestown branch of the Boston Public Library.

HOW TO COMMENT:

The Study Committee would like to hear your feedback on the working study report.

Please submit comments via thefeedback formatboston.gov/monumentsquareor by emailingBLC@boston.gov.

Comments on this draft of the working study report may be submitted until November 4, 2026.

When the next draft is posted in November, comments may be submitted on the revised draft until January 12, 2027.

What a Landmark District and Protection Area are.

What the Study Committee is proposing for the boundaries.

How the proposed Monument Square Landmark District will affect you if you own property within the designated area.

BACKGROUND ON THE PROPOSED MONUMENT SQUARE LANDMARK DISTRICT

On July 26, 2022, the Boston Landmarks Commission accepted for further study a petition submitted by registered voters to designate the Monument Square Landmark District in Charlestown.

The Study Committee is tasked with understanding and documenting the historic, architectural, and archaeological significance of the neighborhood, determining whether or not it meets the criteria for designation under State law, proposing the district’s boundaries, and crafting recommendations for long-term management of the district that preserve the area’s unique historic character while allowing thoughtful, context-sensitive growth.

Public participation is essential to the Study Committee’s work.
