MONTGOMERY –Governor Kay Ivey on Monday proclaimed Saturday, October 10, 2026, as Alabama Girls in Sports Day, recognizing the female athletes throughout the state and reaffirming Alabama’s commitment to ensuring women and girls have the right to participate, compete and succeed in sports.
“Alabama sets the standard when it comes to protecting girls sports,”said Governor Ivey.“In Alabama, we recognize that there are fundamental biological differences between males and females.
We know if the Good Lord made you a boy, you are a boy, and if He made you a girl, you are a girl.
We will continue standing up for the opportunity for girls to compete fairly and safely.”
Represented by Roman numerals “XX,” October 10 reflects two X chromosomes that are characteristic of the female sex.
The proclamation recognizes the vital role Title IX has played in expanding opportunities for female athletes and celebrates the contributions of women throughout the history of sports.
During Governor Ivey’s Administration, Alabama has taken meaningful steps to protect opportunities for girls and women in sports, such as establishing protections for female student-athletes in public K-12 schools through House Bill 391 in 2021 and extended those protections to public two-year and four-year institutions of higher education through House Bill 261 in 2023.
The day serves as an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of female athletes, inspire the next generation of competitors and reaffirm Alabama’s commitment to protecting opportunities for women and girls in sports.
