A federal grand jury has indicted ten lawful permanent residents on charges of illegal voting and making false claims of citizenship to vote, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced. The indictments follow an investigation by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in St. Paul.
The defendants are from countries including Liberia, Lithuania, Ghana, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Germany, Canada, and South Africa. They are accused of voting in recent elections, including the 2022 and 2024 elections, with the most recent alleged instance in the August 2026 primary election. Nine defendants were arrested in Minnesota and one in Massachusetts.
The case is being prosecuted by First Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph S. Teirab in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Minnesota.
Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin said, "Our message to aliens who vote in American elections is clear: we will find you, arrest you, and you will face the consequences, including criminal charges and deportation."
The charges are part of what the DHS described as the Trump Administration's broader focus on stopping non-citizens from voting in American elections.
