The Michigan Department of Natural Resources commissioned a new research vessel on Sept. 30 to monitor Lake Michigan fisheries and replace an aging predecessor.
The 66-foot steel-hulled Research Vessel Steelhead, christened during a ceremony in Charlevoix, represents a significant upgrade for the state's fisheries research capabilities. The vessel features state-of-the-art navigation equipment, advanced sampling technology, a gyrostabilizer for increased stability in rough water, and a bow thruster for precise maneuvering in tight spaces.
"Lake Michigan is one of the largest freshwater lakes on the planet, and the RV Steelhead and crew will serve as the State of Michigan's primary means to collect data and inform fisheries management decisions on this Great Lake," said DNR Fisheries Division Chief Randy Claramunt.
The vessel was designed by Boksa Marine Design and built by Moran Iron Works in partnership with Superior Boats. Funding came from state budget appropriations in 2023 and 2025, along with a grant from the Great Lakes Fishery Trust.
The RV Steelhead will conduct surveys monitoring lake whitefish, lake trout, burbot, yellow perch, and invasive species such as alewife and rainbow smelt.
