Elvin Hernandez, a Connecticut Department of Transportation employee, was struck and killed by a motor vehicle last week while performing road maintenance work on Interstate 95 in Fairfield. Governor Ned Lamont announced that he is directing U.S. and state flags on all state government buildings and properties to be lowered to half-staff on Friday, October 2, from sunrise to sunset, in honor of Hernandez.

Memorial and interment services are scheduled for Friday in Bridgeport and Easton, according to the governor's office.

"This is a tragic situation that never should have happened, and it is a stark reminder to all drivers about the critical importance of showing respect to all road maintenance workers and first responders while working on the roadside," Lamont said.

The flag-lowering directive applies to the State Capitol and all state-operated buildings, grounds, and facilities statewide. The governor is encouraging private individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, and other entities to lower their flags for the same duration.
