The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors approved a $6.2 billion budget for fiscal year 2026-27 on Sept. 29, maintaining funding for health care, affordable housing, food assistance, and public safety.
The board voted unanimously to adopt the budget, which includes $624.8 million in General Fund reserves above the county's required minimum. The budget allocates $50 million for workforce housing, $35 million for Coastside projects, $10 million for a child care initiative, and $5 million for parks projects. The county added 3 net positions, bringing total authorized county positions to 5,948.
The budget includes a $7 million pledge toward the American Cancer Society's planned Bay Area Hope Lodge for cancer patients and caregivers.
The board assumes receipt of the full Vehicle License Fee amount owed by the state, while the county pursues a permanent resolution to unpaid shortfalls. The state owes an estimated $226 million to the county this year, with shortfalls expected to exceed $1 billion by 2030 if unresolved, according to the county.
