Boulder County commissioners on Sept. 29 approved a letter of intent to provide $11.2 million to help residents of the San Lazaro mobile home park purchase their property after the owner put it up for sale.

In August, San Lazaro residents asked the commissioners for the funding. Under Colorado law, which Boulder County supported, the residents have the right to purchase the park for the same amount as an outside offer made to the existing owner. The county's $11.2 million commitment is conditional on residents raising the remaining funds needed for the purchase.

Commissioner Claire Levy said the county had heard from community members across Boulder who were supporting the effort. "It is heartening to me that residents of Boulder are so supportive of the San Lazaro residents," Levy said.

Commissioner Marta Loachamin noted that San Lazaro is "an existing community of affordable homes with over 800 residents in one of the most expensive parts of Colorado" and said the county hoped its commitment would encourage other funders to step forward.
