A three-mile pavement and bicycle safety project along Point San Pedro Road in the San Rafael area is nearing completion in October, according to Marin County and the City of San Rafael.
The project extends from San Rafael High School to east of Biscayne Drive and includes pavement preservation, expanded bicycle lanes, updated roadway striping, and pedestrian safety features. The two agencies coordinated the work as a single continuous project because the road crosses between city and county jurisdiction five times.
The improvements create more continuous bicycle lanes with green pavement markings at select locations to increase visibility. Vehicle travel lanes were narrowed to 11 feet to provide additional space for the bicycle lanes where roadway width allows. Some on-street parking was removed to accommodate the expanded bicycle facilities.
Pedestrian improvements include new rectangular rapid flashing beacons at marked crosswalks at Knight Drive, Peacock Drive, and Riviera Drive. When activated by pedestrians, the beacons increase visibility of crossings to approaching drivers. The project also includes curb extensions and updated pavement markings.
Point San Pedro Road serves residential neighborhoods, schools, businesses, and China Camp State Park, making it an important transportation connection through eastern San Rafael. According to Marin County Supervisor Mary Sackett, "We know that students are biking to high school, and we want to provide every opportunity for them to get there safely."
The improvements are part of a broader investment in the corridor in 2026, which also included installation of a high-intensity pedestrian signal at Summit Avenue and landslide repairs in China Camp State Park. The county is also replacing a retaining wall east of Marina Boulevard, with completion expected by the end of October.
