A traveling veteran visiting Ohio for a funeral received his prescriptions in about 15 minutes at a VA pharmacy using the Federal Electronic Health Record system, the Department of Veterans Affairs said.

The veteran had left his medications at home when he arrived at VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System's Toledo Community-Based Outpatient Clinic. Clinical pharmacist Makenzy Carter used the recently deployed Federal EHR to quickly access his records from his home VA facility and confirm his prescriptions. "I didn't have to send him to registration," Carter said. "We were able to get him checked in, his medications processed, filled, and on his way within about 15 minutes."

The efficient process was possible because both the veteran's home VA and the Toledo clinic use the Federal EHR system. The speed of the service stood out to the veteran, who repeatedly asked whether the pharmacy had all the information it needed.
