Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger established an artificial intelligence task force to address risks posed by rapid artificial intelligence development. The task force was created via Executive Order 22 and will focus on workforce displacement, data privacy, and cybersecurity, according to the governor's office.

The announcement follows Spanberger's introduction of a data center accountability framework last week, which includes the AI Task Force among its components. In separate remarks, Spanberger called for federal oversight of artificial intelligence, sending a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, and Democratic congressional leaders.

"The federal government needs to play a much larger role in regulating this emerging technology to ensure its safe development and the protection of people and their livelihoods," Spanberger wrote in the letter. She warned of significant risks related to data privacy, employment, and resource consumption if regulation remains solely in the hands of private companies.
