The Department of Homeland Security said that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement lodged a detainer against Chamkaur Singh, an Indian national accused of causing a fatal semi-truck crash in California.
Singh was arrested on Sept. 1 in Moab, Utah, after a police officer identified him as the subject of a nationwide fugitive warrant for vehicular manslaughter. The crash occurred on March 29 in Ontario, California, when his semi-truck rear-ended one vehicle, killing one passenger and critically injuring another, then struck a second vehicle and killed another person. Seven vehicles were involved in the collision, with two additional people injured, according to the agency.
Singh entered the United States illegally through Arizona in August 2021 and was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol but released, according to DHS. He was issued a commercial driver's license by California on May 10, 2025, despite his status. His driving record included three convictions for improper lane positioning, following too closely, and speeding, yet his CDL remained active at the time of his arrest.
