Boulder County is launching Safe Streets for Students, a regional planning initiative designed to improve transportation safety for students attending public schools in the Boulder Valley School District and St. Vrain Valley School District.

The project will examine crash history, existing infrastructure, demographic information, and community feedback to identify schools with the greatest transportation safety needs. It will develop tailored action plans for 5–10 priority schools and create a transportation safety toolkit that all schools in both districts can use.

Students, families, school staff, and community members can participate through an online survey, virtual open house, interactive map, a Minecraft game activity, and pop-up events.

Potential strategies may include enhanced pedestrian crossings, bicycle lanes, walking school buses, crossing guards, and policies addressing school bus stops and drop-off management.

The project began in spring 2026 and will continue through fall 2027. It is funded by the Colorado Department of Transportation, with matching funds from Boulder County and multiple other jurisdictions.
