Oklahoma consumers have recovered $260 million in unclaimed life insurance and annuity benefits through the Life Insurance Policy Locator (LIPL), a free search tool, the Oklahoma Insurance Department announced during Life Insurance Awareness Month. Since January 2017, more than 13,000 Oklahoma residents have submitted search requests that resulted in confirmed matches, with over $40 million in benefits recovered so far this year.
The LIPL, hosted by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), securely searches participating insurance companies to identify existing life insurance policies or annuity contracts at no cost. Beneficiaries can submit a request with the deceased's information, including their Social Security number, legal name, date of birth, and date of death. The search process may take 90 business days or more. Insurance companies contact requesters directly if a match is found and the requester is confirmed as the beneficiary.
Nationally, the NAIC's online tool has received more than 1.5 million policy search requests, resulting in over 780,000 confirmed matches with life insurance policies or annuities totaling over $16 billion as of July 31, 2026.
