Michigan residents receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits and affected by recent storms in Wayne County may be eligible for replacement benefits to cover food spoiled during power outages.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced an extended assistance window, giving families until Wednesday, Sept. 23 to report losses and gather documentation. Normally, SNAP recipients must report food losses within 10 days, but the department received a federal extension waiver due to the severity of the weather event.

The amount a household can request for replacement benefits is based on the total value of lost food, up to a maximum of one month's regular food assistance benefits.

SNAP recipients with food spoilage from verified power outages or storm damage can call 844-464-3447 or visit the MDHHS website to request replacement benefits. The deadline is Sept. 23, 2026.
