A 38-year-old woman was fatally shot on September 8 at a Sacramento shopping center by a man who had entered the United States illegally, according to law enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security.
The suspect, identified as Rohit Rohit, an Indian national, entered the United States illegally through Arizona in August 2023 and was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol, according to DHS. He was subsequently released into the country. When he approached the victim at her car at the shopping center, she attempted to flee. He chased her, shot her multiple times, and shot her again in the head at close range, local authorities reported. When police caught up to him, he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The victim had a restraining order against Rohit issued in May 2026 after he began stalking her in January. Over months of stalking, he placed an AirTag under her car's hood, deflated her tires, followed her to work, and obtained a key to her apartment. Authorities said he continued stalking her as recently as July 2026, despite the order.
