Connecticut will add four new weekday trains to the Shore Line East rail service starting Monday, October 5, the state Department of Transportation announced.

The expansion includes two eastbound trains from New Haven to New London, departing at 2:55 p.m. and 5:55 p.m., and two westbound trains from New London to New Haven, departing at 4:40 p.m. and 7:28 p.m. The 5:55 p.m. eastbound train connects with a Metro-North Super Express departing New York City at 4:11 p.m.

The new service closes gaps in the existing schedule created by lengthy waits between trains, the agency said. The expansion responds to feedback from a Shore Line East customer satisfaction survey. Connecticut Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto said the trains "directly address the gaps identified by our customers and will provide more convenient, reliable, service for those traveling between New Haven and New London."

The expansion is funded by $3 million in additional funding provided to the Connecticut Department of Transportation as part of state budget adjustments approved by the General Assembly and signed into law by Governor Ned Lamont.
