Transportation equipment prices increased 2.6 percent over the 12 months ending in August 2026, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported. The Producer Price Index, which measures inflation from the perspective of producers and sellers, showed divergent trends across transportation modes.

Water transportation recorded the steepest increase at 16.7 percent year-over-year, while truck transportation costs climbed 14.3 percent. Air freight increased 7.6 percent, rail transport rose 1.4 percent, and freight arrangement and coordination services increased 2.2 percent.

Transportation's acceleration outpaced overall services inflation, which rose 5.1 percent over the same 12-month period. Transportation costs accounted for 15.6 percent of the total Producer Price Index increase across all services.
