Starting September 12, Arizona drivers may need to update their photo with the state after the Arizona Department of Transportation adjusted the requirement from every 12 years to every 16 years.

The change to Arizona law A.R.S. 28-3173 applies to both standard driver licenses and federally compliant Arizona Travel IDs. The standard driver license typically expires when a person turns 65, but updated photos are required to ensure the credential resembles the cardholder.

For Arizona Travel IDs, which are valid for eight years and satisfy TSA requirements at domestic airports, the new 16-year requirement means drivers will need to provide an updated photo at every other license renewal. Nearly half of all Arizona credentials are now federally compliant Travel IDs.

Drivers with outdated photos may receive a letter explaining it is time to update. They can visit an Arizona Motor Vehicle Division office or schedule an appointment online through azmvdnow.gov.
