Texas' State Board of Education completed a revision of K-12 social studies curriculum and adopted new personal financial literacy standards. The updated standards, which took more than a year to develop, bring Texas requirements in line with recent state law mandates to refocus education on Western Civilization.

The revised standards for U.S. History, World History, World Geography and Government reflect "Texas' commitment to rigorous learning, with a central emphasis on the foundations of Western Civilization and the values that shaped America's and Texas' founding," according to Board Chairman Aaron Kinsey.

The State Board also adopted new Personal Financial Literacy standards that will teach students to set financial goals, budget, save, invest and develop business plans. The standards include instruction on "the financial impact on their economic future under capitalism compared to socialism and communism," Kinsey said.

The updated standards comply with state law changes enacted over recent legislative sessions that introduced new mandates to refocus K-12 education on Western Civilization and related values.
