Four West Coast states have issued joint immunization recommendations for the 2026-2027 respiratory virus season, according to the Washington State Department of Health.
The West Coast Health Alliance (WCHA), a partnership between California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington, developed the recommendations based on guidance from major medical organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the American Academy of Family Physicians.
The alliance emphasized the importance of protecting people at highest risk for severe illness from respiratory viruses including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). This includes the youngest and oldest individuals; people with underlying medical conditions or pregnant individuals; people living in congregate settings; and those who live or work with people at higher risk.
Seasonal immunization is a critical tool to reduce serious illness, hospitalization, community transmission, and strain on health care systems, the alliance said.
The WCHA said it will continue to evaluate evidence and update assessments as new information becomes available.
