Federal court halts USPS voting rule through November elections

A federal court has issued a preliminary injunction blocking a U.S. Postal Service rule that would restrict voting access through the November general elections, according to a statement from California Governor Gavin Newsom.

California and other states successfully challenged the rule after filing a lawsuit, Newsom said. The injunction keeps the rule blocked through the 2026 elections as litigation continues in court.

"They tried to restrict voting rights via the USPS system, we sued, and we won an order blocking the USPS rule through the November elections," Newsom said.

The court order renders moot an appeal that was pending before the U.S. Supreme Court, Newsom's statement indicated.
