A suspected drunk driver faces charges after a head-on crash on Interstate 270 in Montgomery County, Maryland, killed two people and injured two others, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
The crash occurred August 29 when a vehicle traveling the wrong way collided with another vehicle carrying four occupants. Two occupants died: Musammat Shamima Begum, 46, and her daughter Areebah Jahin, 23. Two others, a 62-year-old man and an 8-year-old girl, were hospitalized.
Jose Antonio Caballero-Nolasco, from El Salvador, was taken to a local hospital for treatment and later transferred to the Montgomery County Detention Center. He was charged with two counts of gross negligent manslaughter, two counts of homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, and life-threatening injury by a motor vehicle. Immigration and Customs Enforcement lodged a detainer on September 1. Investigators said alcohol impairment was a contributing factor in the crash.
