Special operations forces tackle cumulative blast injury risk

Repeated blast exposure during special operations training may cause long-term cognitive damage; the military is now deploying protective measures.

The U.S. military's special operations forces community is developing technology and protocols to reduce the risks of repeated blast exposure to protect warfighters' long-term brain health during training and operations.

Special operations soldiers encounter significant low-level blast exposure as a normal part of their training. In just six months of initial training, a soldier will fire thousands of small arms rounds, employ hundreds of flash-bang devices, and conduct dozens of explosive breaches.

The scientific community suspects cumulative, repeated blasts could cause long-term cognitive effects, but there are currently no validated thresholds to guide medical decisions or return-to-duty timelines, according to the Department of War. Tracking blast exposure presents additional challenges; current sensors are often bulky and do not synchronize smoothly with military systems.

To address these issues, the special operations community launched the Elite Force Pilot Team to evaluate high-fidelity monitoring during high-risk training and operations. The team aims to standardize how leaders make risk and readiness decisions.

One innovation being deployed is a multiuse charge housing designed to optimize breaching operations while reducing hazardous blast overpressure on warfighters by 25 to 60 percent. The system uses advanced 3D computer modeling and wave-shaping design to focus blast energy toward the target while allowing for lower explosive weight.

The military is also redesigning firing ranges and facilities based on advanced modeling of blast waves, using new construction materials that absorb shockwaves. Operators are seeing improvements in standard gear, including updated weapon suppressors, heavy weapon simulators, and strict helmet policies. Researchers are using biometric instrumented head forms to measure what happens inside a helmet during a blast, leading to improved helmet padding systems.

"Our priority is to field technology that treats the operator as our premier weapon system," said Chris Wilson, division lead for human weapon system at the U.S. Special Operations Command's Science and Technology Directorate.
