The Michigan Department of Transportation is investing approximately $1 million to improve a bridge at the US-131 and I-196 interchange in Grand Rapids, beginning Sept. 8.
Work on the southbound US-131 bridge over northbound US-131 includes substructure improvements, steel beam repair, barrier wall reconstruction and approach work. The project is scheduled to run through late October.
Traffic restrictions will include single and double-lane closures on southbound US-131 from Ann Street to I-196 throughout the project. The ramp from eastbound I-196 to northbound US-131 is scheduled to close Sept. 8 through late October. The Pearl Street entrance ramp to northbound US-131 closes Sept. 8. The Leonard Street and Turner Avenue entrance ramp to southbound US-131 is scheduled to close Sept. 24.
Based on economic modeling, the investment is expected to directly and indirectly support eight jobs. The improvements will repair and extend the bridge's service life.
