The Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for El Salvador is set to terminate on September 9, 2026, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
USCIS is notifying affected recipients that employment authorization documents that expired before the termination date are being automatically extended until September 9, 2026, the agency said.
Employees with qualifying TPS-based work permits should receive a notice from USCIS detailing the extension. According to the agency, employers may accept the expired work permit combined with the USCIS extension notice as proof of continued work authorization under standard Form I-9 verification procedures.
For Form I-9 purposes, employers should list September 9, 2026 as the expiration date in both sections of the form along with a note in the additional information box, USCIS stated.
