All individuals on supervised probation for domestic violence-related offenses in Marin County were found to be compliant with their probation terms during an operation conducted August 31, the county Probation Department said.
The Marin County Probation Department, working with the San Rafael Police Department and the Coordination of Probation Enforcement Team, conducted the surprise compliance checks as part of an effort that also focused on violence prevention education. The department engaged families to discuss different forms of bullying and provided resources on identifying, preventing and addressing it.
Research shows that approximately 20% of students report being bullied, with potential for lasting emotional, mental and physical effects, according to the department. Children who experience bullying may have an increased risk of becoming victims of domestic violence later in life.
Family members and survivors contacted during the operation reported positive developments, according to the Probation Department. They said offenders were attending batterers intervention programs, maintaining employment and abstaining from illegal substances and alcohol. One survivor said the checks help hold her partner accountable, while another reported feeling empowered to contact probation or law enforcement if her partner became abusive.
