Arizona Department of Transportation opened a new 239-foot tunnel as a major milestone in a $106 million project to build a free-flowing interchange between Interstate 40 and US 93 in west Kingman.
The tunnel carries northbound Beale Street traffic from downtown Kingman toward northbound US 93 heading to Las Vegas. The new interchange, which includes one mile of new ramps, will allow traffic to flow freely between the two highways and eliminate the need for motorists to stop at a traffic signal on Beale Street at I-40.
This is the second tunnel on the project. A 215-foot tunnel serving local traffic on Fort Beale Drive opened in September 2025. The department has also completed rock blasting along I-40 and finished constructing sound walls.
Work underway includes paving the new ramps connecting I-40 and US 93. The department is preparing to install the final bridge girders on a flyover ramp connecting southbound US 93 to eastbound I-40, work expected in October. Construction is expected to continue into 2027, when the interchange will open with 6 miles of widened or newly constructed roadway.
The project, which began in July 2024, also includes five new bridges, two bridge widenings, four bridge rehabilitations and two miles of sound walls. It will widen more than a mile of I-40 in both directions between the new interchange and Stockton Hill Road, add a merge lane on US 93 northbound, and include drainage features.
