The Bureau of Transportation Statistics released 2024 state-level transportation spending data, revealing significant variations in how much states invest in roads, rail and airports.
Alaska leads in per capita state and local transportation expenditures at $3,229, followed by New York at $2,413. Alabama reported the lowest per capita spending at $643, with Mississippi at $670.
The data covers state and local spending on highways, rail and air transportation across all 50 states. The State-Level Transportation Public Finance Statistics dataset includes figures from 2020 through 2024, with the exception of 2023 state highway data, which the Federal Highway Administration did not release.
The agency said it will continue releasing state-level data annually, with timing dependent on data availability.
