The City of Pittsburgh ordered 13 new fire apparatus for the Bureau of Fire, with support from a $4 million annual investment by Highmark Health, Mayor Corey O'Connor announced.
The order includes eight new custom engine pumper trucks and five custom ladder aerial trucks. The trucks will be supported through Highmark Health's $4 million annual investment over five years for vehicles, equipment, and resources for first responders.
"One of my priorities coming into office was making sure our first responders have reliable vehicles and equipment to do their jobs safely," O'Connor said. "These new trucks are a commitment to our firefighters and the safety of our communities."
Acting Fire Chief Mat Davis said the new engine and ladder trucks will enable firefighters to respond quickly and safely to every call. Ralph Sicuro, president of Pittsburgh Fire Fighters IAFF Local No. 1, noted that the city's aging fleet had faced increasing maintenance challenges and limited reserve capacity.
"These new apparatuses will help ensure our firefighters have the reliable equipment they need when Pittsburgh residents call for help," Sicuro said.
The order was authorized by the City's Equipment Leasing Authority. The timeline for delivery has not yet been determined.
