NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya announced the selection of Dr. Peter Joseph Embí as director of the National Library of Medicine, effective September 10, 2026. Embí is a tenured professor of biomedical informatics and internal medicine and Endowed Director of Biomedical Informatics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
Embí will lead the National Library of Medicine, the world's largest biomedical library, with an annual budget of approximately $495 million and a workforce of nearly 1,400. He will be the NLM's fifth director since it became the National Library of Medicine in 1956.
Embí brings nearly three decades of clinical, research, academic, and executive leadership experience. He previously served as president and CEO of the Regenstrief Institute and as Vice-President for Learning Health Systems at IU Health. He also held leadership roles at Indiana University School of Medicine and The Ohio State University, where he served as the nation's first chief research information officer.
Embí earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Florida and his medical doctorate from the University of South Florida. He completed his internal medicine residency at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland and a rheumatology and immunology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. He is president of the American College of Medical Informatics and a past president and board chair of the American Medical Informatics Association. He was elected to the National Academy of Medicine.
