The Oregon Department of Transportation has expanded deployment of the PrePass Bypass Mobile App, allowing qualified trucking carriers to bypass participating weigh stations at highway speed while receiving in-cab safety alerts.
The app is now live at 19 weigh station sites statewide, with two additional locations expected operational by year-end. Qualified carriers that meet Oregon's safety and credential standards can continue at highway speeds, allowing enforcement officers to focus on carriers that do not meet those standards.
The app delivers alerts to drivers about steep grades, sharp curves, and low clearances. Future enhancements are expected to include warnings for work zones and weather events.
"What makes PrePass stand out is its in-cab safety alerts for drivers," said Carla Phelps, the state's Commerce and Compliance Division administrator. "Together, these features support a safer, more efficient transportation system for our state."
For trucking companies, each successful bypass can save up to 7 minutes, reduce fuel consumption by approximately 0.5 gallons, and lower operating costs by up to $11.75. The PrePass Safety Alliance, the nonprofit that operates the system, currently has partnerships in all 50 states and has processed more than 1.6 billion successful bypasses.
