The General Services Administration announced that it will lead implementation of a new Office of Management and Budget directive requiring federal agencies to use the GSA's Login.gov platform as the unified sign-in and identity verification system for public access to federal digital services.
Login.gov, part of the GSA's Technology Transformation Services, provides a secure sign-in platform already used by local, state, and federal government partners. The service employs layered security combining technical safeguards, risk-based detection, ongoing monitoring, and a specialized anti-fraud team focused on preventing identity theft and abuse.
By consolidating to a single login system, agencies will reduce duplicative technology investments, strengthen anti-fraud measures, and improve the user experience. The public will have one secure account for accessing multiple government services, eliminating the need for separate usernames and passwords across federal websites.
"Expanding Login.gov adoption creates a more simple, safe, and consistent digital government experience for the American people," said GSA Administrator Edward C. Forst.
Ahead of its 10-year anniversary in 2027, the GSA said it is strengthening Login.gov with additional fraud protections, lower pricing for agency partners, and a refreshed user experience. The GSA said it is prepared to support agencies transitioning to the platform with onboarding processes, partner support teams, technical documentation, and integration assistance.
