Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont announced that the State Bond Commission will vote on releasing $650,000 in state funding for an inclusive playground at Flanders Elementary School in East Lyme.
The funds will go to the Miracle League of Southeastern Connecticut, a nonprofit that provides recreational and educational opportunities for children with physical, cognitive, and developmental challenges. An inclusive playground is designed so children of all abilities can play and interact together, according to the announcement.
"Playgrounds are great for children, but we need playgrounds that are great for all children, not just some," said State Senator Martha Marx, who brought the project to the governor's attention. "This playground will provide assurance to every family in East Lyme and beyond that their kids can get outside and play."
The Miracle League provides opportunities for children throughout southeastern Connecticut with physical, cognitive, and developmental challenges to participate in recreational, educational, and cultural activities in an accessible, nurturing and non-competitive environment.
The State Bond Commission is scheduled to vote on the allocation at its meeting on September 8, 2026.
