Oregon's insurance commissioner extended an emergency order that prevents insurance companies from canceling or declining to renew policies for customers in areas affected by the state's wildfires.

The Oregon Division of Financial Regulation issued the original order in late July. Commissioner TK Keen announced the 30-day extension through September 29.

"Wildfire season is not over, and the last thing consumers should be worried about is receiving a cancellation or nonrenewal notice right now," Keen said.

The order requires all property and casualty insurers to suspend cancellations and nonrenewals, establish grace periods for premium payments, and extend deadlines for policyholders to report claims or submit claims-related communications. Insurers must also take all practicable steps to provide opportunities for policyholders to report claims.

Consumers with questions about the order or insurance claims related to wildfire damage can contact the division's consumer advocates at 888-877-4894 or dfr.insurancehelp@oregon.gov.
