California announced $48.5 million in grants for 18 economic development projects expected to create 20,000 jobs across 33 counties, the latest distribution from the state's Regional Investment Initiative launched in 2021.
The grants span seven regional project clusters focused on aerospace and defense, advanced manufacturing, high-tech, shipbuilding and quantum sectors. The state has now invested a total of $434.5 million through the initiative since its creation.
This latest round follows an $80 million distribution in August 2025 that supported 11 projects and was expected to create more than 23,000 jobs.
The North State projects include investments in irrigation and virtual fencing technology to address drought and sustainability, and restoration of the Yreka Carnegie, a historic building converted into a rural business innovation hub. Redwood Region projects span sustainable forestry, regional food access, healthcare training and clean energy, with private funders contributing an additional $2.5 million.
The Capital Region received funding to launch the Capital Biomanufacturing Alliance, which aims to connect research, industry and investors to develop biomanufacturing businesses. The Bay Area-Delta region is receiving support to transform Mare Island's historic shipyard into an applied research and technology campus focused on maritime manufacturing.
In the Central Valley, grants will support shovel-ready projects expected to create more than 3,000 jobs and provide 250 internships for underserved populations. The state also funded The Forge, a new innovation hub in the Central Valley designed to help entrepreneurs test and grow businesses.
