Starting with the class of 2027, Oregon high school students must complete a personal finance course covering budgeting, credit, debt, investing, taxes and financial wellbeing before graduation.
The curriculum requirement, taking effect this fall, implements legislation passed in 2023 with bipartisan support. The Oregon Department of Education has worked with teachers and financial education experts to establish standards and assemble instructional materials.
Ninety-five percent of Oregon's 197 school districts will offer the new curriculum this school year. The law allows districts to petition for a one-year delay, so students in postponing districts will begin the course in fall 2027.
