Four schools in the Alamo area received a combined $1.1 million in state career training grants from the Texas Workforce Commission.
The Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grants totaling $1,113,310 will support career and technical education programs by helping the schools purchase equipment to train 202 students for high-demand occupations including construction managers and registered nurses, according to the Texas Workforce Commission.
Poth ISD received $331,792 to train 45 nursing students in partnership with Palo Alto College. Southside ISD was awarded $339,750 to train 60 nursing students, also with Palo Alto College. Southwest ISD received $350,000 to train 60 nursing students with Palo Alto College. Ingram ISD was granted $91,768 to train 37 construction management students in partnership with St. Philip's College.
The awards were presented at a ceremony at Palo Alto College by TWC Commissioner Representing the Public Brent Connett.
The JET grant program, funded by the Texas Legislature, is designed to defray startup costs for developing or expanding career and technical education programs at school districts, community colleges, and charter schools. Equipment purchased through the grants must be used to train students for jobs in high-demand occupations.
